After running art lessons through Teaching and Learning Crew, we discovered there was many children and parents who wanted help, but due to finances and other barriers, were not able to attend. This was, both in our education and art sides of our business something and we wanted to be able to help those that needed help, but couldn't afford it and that day, Stonequarry Arts and Education Incorporated (not for profit) came to life. We collected our friends, other teachers, writers, artists and mothers to pool our collective experience and start to build something great.
We are funded through grants, donations and fundraising. We put into our little initiative everything we have, to bring valuable opportunities to the community.
This February 2024 we are pleased to announce the successful grant from Country Arts Support Program. We will have a series of kids workshops available, free of charge and funded through C.A.S.P. I will be mentoring these groups to create successful artworks that will be exhibited locally. Stay tuned for more information!
The 6-week Art for Wellbeing workshops for children aged 8-12 offered a dynamic blend of creativity and emotional exploration. Each session, led by an artist and art therapist, was designed to support self-expression and emotional growth.
Kids began with self-portraits and personal symbols, exploring their identities and feelings through art. The focus on week 2 was on expressing various emotions. Using colours and textures, children created artworks that represented their feelings, making emotions more understandable and manageable. Participants designed visual "emotional landscapes" to illustrate how they perceive and experience different emotions in week 3. In week 4 kids collaborative projects encouraged teamwork and connection, fostering a sense of community among peers. In week 5, children reflected on their earlier work, revisiting and updating their pieces to symbolise personal growth and evolving emotions. In week 6 the series concluded with a celebration of their artistic and emotional journeys, where children shared their creations and discussed their experiences. Overall, the workshops combined artistic activities with therapeutic insights, creating a supportive environment for children to explore and express their emotions. The workshops culminated with the works being displayed at local businesses.
The Unlocking Creativity project has significantly enhanced the wellbeing of children in our community by addressing their emotional, psychological, and social needs through creative expression.
First and foremost, the project has provided a valuable outlet for emotional expression. Engaging in creative activities allows kids to process and articulate their feelings in a constructive way. This can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with verbal communication or who are dealing with stress and anxiety. By creating art, music, or participating in imaginative play, children find a safe space to explore and manage their emotions, contributing to their overall emotional wellbeing.
Additionally, the project has fostered a sense of achievement and self-worth among children. As they see their creative ideas come to life, their confidence grows. This boost in self-esteem is crucial for their mental health, as it helps counteract feelings of inadequacy and builds resilience. The project’s emphasis on celebrating every child’s unique talents and ideas also promotes a positive self-image and a sense of belonging.
Socially, the project has encouraged collaboration and peer interaction. Working together on creative projects helps children develop essential social skills such as communication, empathy, and teamwork. These interactions not only strengthen friendships but also create a supportive network where kids feel valued and understood.
Moreover, the inclusive and supportive environment fostered by the project helps to reduce feelings of isolation and exclusion. Children from diverse backgrounds come together, sharing their experiences and perspectives, which promotes a sense of community and mutual respect.
In essence, the Unlocking Creativity project has positively impacted the wellbeing of children by providing emotional outlets, boosting self-esteem, enhancing social skills, and fostering a sense of community. This holistic approach to creativity supports the overall development and happiness of the kids involved.
